Soulful journey inspires NZ singer. Tamar McLeod Sinclair – Wellington graduate & a unique NZ singer & composer.

From the shores of Aotearoa/New Zealand to the heart of Europe: Tamar McLeod Sinclair, born in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore from a mix of Ngai Tahu, French Polynesian and European roots has just returned from a five year musical journey through Europe.

Tamar is one of just a few solo female artists from New Zealand who has set out on her own to learn from other cultures and to share her music internationally.

From a very young age Tamar’s life was driven by a love for music which led her on an extraordinary journey from the south Pacific to Australia, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, England, Scotland, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Israel and the USA, singing her heart out and gathering a mind-boggling array of experiences and knowledge.

During her five and a half years in Europe, Tamar trained and performed with highly acclaimed international artists and teachers at schools, theatre companies and festivals. She has worked with Lisa Sokolov and the Stimmen Festival in Germany, Peter K Elkus and L`Association Art Musique Européenne in France, Ida Kelarova and the International School for Human Voice in Czech Republic, Kal`i Cerchen (Black Star) of the Gypsy Theatre Company Romathan in Slovakia, Enrique Vargas and Teatro De Los Sentidos, (Theatre of The Senses) in Spain, Ralf Peters of the Roy Hart Theatre in Germany, and Bentzion (BZ) Goldberg with the Tuscany Project in Italy. She has sought musical inspiration and inner strength from a wide variety of experiences including walking the 1200kms pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago from Lourdes in France to Cape Finisterre in Spain.

Tamar graduated with a BMus majoring in vocal jazz performance under the tutelage of David Feehan, Bruce Brown and Norman Meehan of Massey University Conservatorium of Music in Wellington.

Tamar is well on the way to achieving her goal to be an authentic singer, musician and composer. On September 25, 2010 Tamar released her debut album The Heart Notes from the sparkling and inspirational shores of St Tropéz in the south of France.

She was the director of the project for TaMartin Productions with Czech co-producer Martin Kašpar. Top international musicians from 12 countries participated in the recording at some of the music industry's finest recording studios in Europe including Sono Records in Praha, Czech Republic, Blind Records in Barcelona, Spain, and Red Barn Studios in Perthshire, Scotland. The album was mastered for CD and vinyl on the premises of Real World Studios and with Mike Marsh at The Exchange in London.

The Heart Notes begins with a whispered Maori proverb echoing Tamar’s Maori roots and launches into a live sound-scape of airports, lush strings reflecting Tuscan landscapes, haunting gypsy melodies, fusions of jazz harmony, Gaelic prayers, funky horns and obscure scratchings. Each song, she says, reflects aspects of living landscape that are all unique.

Tamar will give her first solo performance in New Zealand since returning from five years in Europe at Expressions, playing a beautiful Steinway grand piano. A night not to be missed!
