A practice rooted in dance/movement therapy, authentic movement is a simple yet profound form involving a mover and a witness. The mover begins with eyes closed, and focuses on his or her internal bodily sensations, images, and feelings and is invited to follow an inner impulse towards movement.
The mover allows him/herself to be moved by the inner landscape. The witness serves as a holding and containing energy for the mover, creating a safe space for the mover to share his/her inner experience.
The witness practices both witnessing other/s while simultaneously witnessing one’s self. The witness is invited to not only see with the eyes and the brain, but to track his/her own internal physical and emotional response to the mover.
The practice cultivates conscious presence while inviting direct expression and awareness of the unconscious in a safe environment.
Avital Furlager, MA, BC-DMT, is a dance/movement therapist and yoga teacher and worked as a therapist with international refugees for four years. She first studied authentic movement and contemplative dance practice at Naropa University with Zoe Avstreih and Barbara Dilley. She has been practising both forms for over eight years, and has been hosting community practice and workshops for the last six years. These practices have served her as a ground for deepening into self awareness and cultivation of compassion for the human experience. Avital completed advanced training in the facilitation of authentic movement with Zoe Avstreih at The Center for the Study of Authentic Movement.
$30 with a pot luck dinner afterwards!
