What lies beneath (and around) the museum?

Anyone who has ever wondered what creatures lie behind the scenes at Auckland Museum will get the chance to find out on February 26 and 27 when the curators open the normally-locked doors to their collections. For one weekend visitors to the Museum can sign-up for special tours (limited to 15 people per tour) to curatorial areas including the marine and botanical collections.

Explorama organiser Vincent Lipanovich says the curators are really excited about sharing some of the Museum’s “secrets” and showing the breadth of the collections. “Every Museum visitor has probably wondered about what’s behind the doors they can’t open or how the curators develop their collections and prepare objects for exhibition. Explorama is a chance to get the answers and for children it could be the perfect opportunity to spark a budding interest in science and discovery.”

Other activities include a Monarch Butterfly release, a special children’s activity in Weird & Wonderful and curator-led tours of the Auckland Domain to examine trees, plant diversity, birds and spiders within the park.

Tour bookings: to book for the special tours register your interest on the day at the Atrium info desk.

Meet in the Atrium.
