Martin Thompson makes his images by using a preconceived mathematical pattern of his own invention. By colouring-in millimetre squares painstakingly one by one and row by row, a complex pattern emerges, one which is always paired with it's negative equivalent.
The resulting image is complicated further by chopping it into thousands of pieces and reconstituting it, amazingly the symmetry is maintained and the negative equivalent is still intact.
Martin Thompson has been making work in this way since the 1970s, 'Four New Works' is his fourth exhibition in as many years at the Brett McDowell Gallery.
