This exhibition features fashion plates from Rudolph Ackermann’s 19th century publication Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine that documented changing fashions in dress and furniture from 1809-1828.

These exquisitely rendered plates from the gallery’s collection show how the cultural influences of the time made their mark on early 19th century fashion. Themes include the Turkish harem; the Napoleonic wars; the Gothic revival associated with vampires, horror stories, romance and the novels of Jane Austin and Mary Shelley; and decorative sampling from past centuries such as the Elizabethan period.
