The latest addition to Voyager's galleries is 'Polar Night'. This stunning exhibition of black and white photography captures life aboard the scientific expedition vessel Tara, as she drifted 1800 kilometres whilst on Arctic pack-ice.
Stunning black and white photographs by Vincent Hilaire, now showing until 6 March 2011.
Currently touring New Zealand, having already been exhibited at Museum of Wellington City & Sea and Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, Polar Night by Vincent Hilaire is now on display in Voyager's Edmiston Gallery.
The collection of striking photographs capture scenes from the schooner Tara, as she embarked on an 1800 kilometre journey drifting on Arctic pack-ice as part of a scientific expedition from 2006 to 2008. French photographer Vincent Hilaire joined the vessel during the long polar winter enduring months of permanent darkness, whilst capturing amazing images of the crew's life in the Arctic. The expedition aimed to observe, understand, and quantify the Arctic climate changes to assist global warming decision-making.
The vessel Tara has special significance for New Zealanders as she was formerly known as Seamaster, the vessel Sir Peter Blake used as part of his Blak expeditions work. It was also the vessel on which he was tragically killed in 2001.
Another New Zealand connection was the expedition leader, a Kiwi called Grant Redvers. Grant's background in environmental science and sailing, plus degrees in Geography at Massey University and Environmental and Marine Science at Auckland University, made him a great candidate for the job.
From December 2010 to February 2011 Grant will be embarking on two trips to Antarctica, and to mark the closing of the exhibition Grant will be hosting a Speaker Series evening on Wednesday 2 March at 7.00pm. Come along and hear the story of his incredible adventure in the Arctic aboard Tara, and gain a unique insight into his other adventures. Signed copies of Grant's book, 'Tara Arctic: A New Zealander's Epic Voyage' will be available to purchase on the night.
A Seaweek event.
