Roska biography!
Winter of 2007, a select number of DJs from the then nascent evolution of British rave music, namely Marcus Nasty and Supa D, took a punt on some early production from a young South Londoner. The weeks that followed saw Roska’s inbox inundated with requests for the tune as word got around that his was the name behind the jacking, minimal riddim, ‘Feline’.
Instead of following a scene, he gathered up all of his favourite scenes and started a new one. Merging house, dubstep and Afro beats. - Mixmag
The scene which was first to embrace Roska, would be labelled funky and as energy gathered behind ‘Feline’ on the underground, Roska set out to release it on his own imprint, Kicks & Snares.
“It [Feline] was going down nicely so I pressed it up and called round the distributors but none of em wanted to take it. I put them in the boot of my car and went round the shops myself and even then I got a few knockbacks. Something must’ve clicked for them though cos 6 weeks later they were calling me up for it” – Roska
What “must’ve clicked” is that London was raving to a new energy, and at the precise moment the penny dropped for shops and press alike, Roska had now found his way into the record boxes of Geeneus, Kode 9 and Cooly G and as such was positioned at the forefront of the infant shoot of dance music.
As 2008 drew to a close, Roska began doing cover shows on Rinse FM and was offered residency in April 2009. This became a huge catalyst for Roska’s career as rather than the drip-drip of riddims to be found at dances and on blogsites, Roska would drench whole shows with his own production whetting the appetite of the listener and, as it’s radio, showcasing some production which may not have seen the light of DJ booth. Word spread around the campfire; Roska has riddims. Must have riddims. And he has em in mammoth supply.
“Thanks to Roska, funky will continue to fly free of stylistic parameters” – Fact
A link up with DJ B introduced Roska to Jamie George. “I did the remix of ‘Wonderful Day’, that’s the only tune I play in every set. There was a misunderstanding though and I never got paid for it. So we worked it out that Jamie would do a vocal for my album, which turned out to be ‘Love 2 Night’. After that we realised we work well together and we’re gonna make a lot more music together” – Roska
‘Wonderful Day’ showed Roska was capable of building radio-friendly music as well as DJ tools the underground already loved him for and soon remix requests from both sides of the fence would follow. Roska strode into 2010 with a host of remixes to his name including those for Zed Bias, Four Tet and Martyn. A host of UK and European dates including Fabric, FWD>> and matter, his Rinse FM show and a fervour amongst the blogsites and magazines including a much coveted podcast for US tastemaker publication, XLR8R makes Roska hot property. Ink barely dry on a recording contract with Rinse Recordings and an album due in the Spring, the former MC from south London is surely one to watch.
$10 tickets available from Wednesday 26th January from Real Groovy or online at 1-night.
