Mahler’s magnificent First Symphony, a John Psathas world premiere and Canteloube’s passionate songs from the landscapes of the Auvergne starts the 2011 season in dramatic style with Music Director Eckehard Stier conducting.

Songs of the Auvergne, including the beautiful Baïlero, will feature Australian soprano Sara Macliver who last performed with the APO in Haydn’s The Creation in 2009.

Inspired by folk songs and nature, Stier describes the Mahler symphony as “epic and impressive” while the new Psathas work has been written especially for the occasion and, “the contrast with the Auvergne Songs will be breathtaking”.
