EMR have been providing free community guided snorkel days at the reserve since 2005 and are set for another action-packed summer series thanks to funding from the NZ Refining Company.
Free community guided snorkel days will be happening at the Reotahi site of the Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve on;
Sunday 18th December 10am – 3pm,
Wednesday 4th January 11am – 4pm,
Saturday 11th February 10am – 3pm
Sunday 11th March 10am – 3pm.
We provide all the equipment and experienced guides for free! Just turn up and register down on the beach. All ages and abilities are welcome. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
Snorkelling along the shoreline of the reserve with an experienced guide you may see large schools of mullet and parore, seahorses, pipefish, large red rock crabs, eagle rays, colourful sponges and an abundance of juvenile fish including spotties.
Since the reserve establishment, thousands of people have snorkelled the waters within the reserve with EMR. Our free community guided snorkel days have proven to be a great way for the public to experience the reserve. They're a great family day, as they are safety enhanced with experienced guides who are familiar with the sea conditions in the area and a safety boat off shore.
There will also be a free community open day at the Waikaraka site of the Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve on Saturday 31st March 2012 including intertidal rocky shore discovery and kayaking. For more info go to www.emr.org.nz.
