Touring his new album, The Mighty Cedar, Erez brings the Toronto sound all the way from Canada, with influences from around the world - from bossa to breakbeats and funk to flamenco. Come hear the classical guitar sing to a fresh beat and take in some good vibes.
Erez Sussman first picked up the guitar at age 8, eventually taking up private lessons with Chris Dickson in Toronto. Born into a musical family, he was always surrounded by music, and started jamming with his brother Reuven on drums when he bought his first electric guitar with money from his Bar Mitzvah. The two brothers quickly moved into funk, playing in several bands, notably the New Movement in Toronto, and Get Up to Get Down in Victoria. Throughout this time, the classical guitar was always there, completing his Grade 10 in the Royal Conservatory of Music, and teaching, and collaborating with many other acoustic musicians and classical guitarists.
The new album, The Mighty Cedar, is a culmination of years of travelling, collaborating, listening, playing, and composing, though it is just the tip of the iceberg - his playing is the product of being immersed in a wide range of genres and styles from reggae to rap, soca to samba, classical to flamenco. The tracks included were recorded after he attained his black belt in Karate, from January to the summer of 2011 when the album was released at Trane Studio to a great reception. Since the release he has toured to the Canadian West Coast and will be in New Zealand in December.
Erez has always strived to keep his music meaningful, and champion the cause of music and respect for each other and the planet. He is very active in the community, leading music programs, DJing events, and working with the next generation.
