Monterey Art presents new works by Clare Reily.

The phrase Out of the Blue denotes an element of surprise. Moments that may be filled with joy or distress arise in front of us, out of the blue, and have the ability to change our lives.

The past year has had many such moments for me, living through the continual uncertainty of seemingly endless earthquakes. The challenge has been to find the moments of joy, tranquility and calm within the pattern of 'non' everyday life.

There have been acts of kindness, a collective understanding, an appreciation for what we have and what has been lost. With the many lessons nature has thrown at us, we try to take nothing for granted any more.

This new collection of paintings has accompanied me through the long wobbly months, slowly unfolding in the studio. They have arrived 'out of the blue', a counterbalance to the new normal life. They do not depict the devastation of a ruined city struggling to get back on its feet, but the power of nature that can restore the balance and continues in its opportunistic way to have the final say.
