“Glorious songs … intimate, yearning” – Graham Reid
“Moon breathes new life into these lovely Sephardic ruminations” - Gary Steel, Metro magazine

Auckland ensemble Carolina Moon are set to tour this October/November/December, bringing fiery ancient melodies from their third recently released Mother Tongue CD to life in a moving musical journey that fuses cultures from the past and the present.

For almost 1000 years the beautiful melodies of Judeo Spain have been borne and carried by generations of mothers, lovers and daughters of the Diaspora - unfolding the story of a vibrant people through romances, life, love and loss.

Carolina Moon’s evocative song combines these sensual Ladino melodies with songs and rhythms from the surrounding tide of musical inspirations - Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, with original jazz-tinged world sounds and grooves.

Carolina has performed and collaborated with many leading artists including Rick Robertson, Justo Diaz, Anatolie Torjinsky, Bobby Singh, Kim Cunio, Heather Lee and Mark Isaacs. She spent her formative years on the London jazz and world music scene and in 2002 she studied voice and raga at the Jazz India Vocal Institute, Mumbai. The resulting Shaman’s Kiss CD was nominated in the 2003 Australian Jazz Awards. Her second recording East of the Sun was released in 2007 and her music has seen her perform extensively throughout the UK, Australia, India, China, Aotearoa and the Greater Pacific.

Joining Carolina on tour is one of New Zealand’s leading international saxophonists Roger Manins, Robert Fripp’s legendary League of Crafty Guitarists Nigel Gavin (The Jews Brothers, Nairobi Trio, Bravura, Whirimako Black), Auckland Philharmonia member Matthias Erdrich (acoustic bass) and Chris O’Connor on percussion and drums.
