The hills of Wellington will soon be alive…with the sounds of singing! In August the ‘Reclaim Your Voice’ course will be run for the first time in Wellington to help Wellingtonians learn to sing.
Whether you think (or have been told) you can't sing or are just a bit shy, whether you want to share your voice with the world, or keep it in the shower, this weekend-long course will help you find your singing voice.
The course is led by Christchurch-based Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook. They have been pioneering this work for many years.
Nikki works with choirs from Auckland to Wanaka, providing repertoire, supporting emerging conductors and teaching singing. Gary has been a musician and music teacher for almost 40 years.
According to Nikki Berry, singing is a skill that develops naturally in children. Most people who have trouble singing in tune have had this process interrupted in some way. By learning a range of techniques, and through the creation of a supportive, non-threatening environment, it is possible to reshape the image we have of ourselves as 'non-singers' and reclaim the right to enjoy using our singing voices once again!
This course will help both those who are very shy about singing, and those who just want to improve their singing skills: it’s about exploding the myth of the 'non-singer'.
The weekend course, which runs from 19-21 August, will be held at the historic Turnbull House on Bowen Street, opposite the Beehive.
The workshop will run from 6pm-8pm on Friday night and from 10am-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
