Written by Arthur Meek, and based on 'Our Maoris', the memoirs of Ann Martin.

"This is no longer a country to be feared. It is time to take the reins and do the things that would otherwise not be done."

A crippled English woman arrives in a savage land charged with civilising the natives and, instead, discovers the key to her liberation.

Ann Martin arrived in New Zealand in 1841, the young wife of New Zealand's first Chief Justice. Intrepid, intelligent and possessed with a great sense of humour, she disregarded her personal disability, set about learning te reo, established a makeshift hospital for Maori on the beach at Judges Bay, and dared to dream of all that was possible in this brave new world.

A beautifully crafted production, a charming performance and a story that resonates from through history to today.

Audience testimonials:
"What a superbly moving play. I hope it gets all the accolades it deserves. " - Susan G.

"Laurel Devenie is so wonderful" - Emily P.

"Congratulations to you all for a superb production... Laurel, I was blown away with your performance and deeply moved." - Trish & Barry

"I am so glad I had a tissue up my sleeve. What a powerful and warm and sad story all in one and beautifully performed by Laurel." - Jane L.

"We all thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and what a performance it was. Isn't she amazing, and to arouse so much passion in all of us was simply superb. She even got a standing ovation, which is rare these days."

Presented by Downstage and Auckland Theatre Company.

Directed by Colin McColl.
Starring Laurel Devenie.
