Programme:
Beethoven Symphony 2
Dubois: Saxophone Concerto
Milhaud: Saudades do Brasil
Grayson Gilmour: Existence, Aether 1
The NZSM Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Young, presents an exciting and eclectic programme which highlights two major NZSM prize winners.

Composer Grayson Gilmour, winner of the Jenny McLeod Prize has written a very interesting work work entitled 'Existence, Aether 1' which will have its world premiere in this concert.

Secondly, the winner of the 2011 NZSM Concerto Competition, Reuben Chin will perform the exuberant and technically demanding 'Concerto for Alto Saxophone' by the 20th Century French composer Pierre Max Dubois.

Dubois’s fellow country, Darius Milhaud, lived in Brazil from 1917-1918, specifically in Rio de Janeiro. The folk, songs and dances of this country were to be a huge influence on his future compositions. One of the first works he wrote on his return to Europe is featured in this programme. 'Entitled Saudades do Brazil'(Recollections of Brazil) it was composed in Copenhagen in 1920 and evokes the moods and atmosphere of Brazil in a suite of 12 short movements named after 12 of Rio’s districts.

Rounding out the programme we return to the Classical era with a performance of Beethoven’s 'Symphony 2' which was first performed in Vienna in April of 1803 with the composer conducting. It was around this time that Beethoven’s deafness became more apparent and he realised that it may not be curable. Ironically, the work itself gives no hint of this torment. In fact the scherzo and the finale are filled with vulgar Beethovenian musical jokes, which shocked the sensibilities of many contemporary critics.
