The Evolution of a New Tattoo Culture in Hong Kong - Photographs by Helen Mitchell. The renaissance of tattooing is common in societies where identity is being redefined. Tattoo is a medium or catalyst for the exchange of symbols and cultural icons, it appears to function as reinforcement of personal identity. In contemporary tattoo culture there has been a noticeable shift from subculture to popular culture with female practitioners and their clients leading the way. Shifting Identity combines street scenes of Hong Kong with portraits of tattooists in an exposition of contemporary tattoo culture.
