Number 8 Films presents Matt Smith (TV’s Doctor Who) as Christopher Isherwood (author of the award-winning book and film A Single Man), immersing himself in Berlin’s thriving gay culture in the 1930s as the Nazis came to power and changed the world as we know it.

Direct from a centrepiece gala screening at Frameline 2011, San Francisco’s international gay and lesbian film festival, this daring, witty and moving slice of life biopic doesn’t shy away from depicting the gay couplings that were commonplace in 1930s Berlin before fascism took hold.

Capturing the years before Isherwood met his life partner Don Bachardy, the heart of the film is Isherwood’s love for and relationship with Heinz Neddermayer, a working class street sweeper whose straight brother is drawn inexorably toward the clutches of the Nazi Party.

As burning desire gives way to burning books and Jewish friends that mysteriously disappear in the night, Isherwood faces a choice: does he have the courage to stand up to the evil that threatens to wipe out his kind?
