It’s not just a game: Speaking Season with Stephanie Gibson and Ron Palenski
The black singlet is instantly recognisable as a symbol of the archetypal ‘kiwi bloke’ – a strong, hard-working, independent, no-nonsense man. When combined with other iconic items of clothing (or ‘Kiwiana’) such as the swandri jacket, gumboots and jandals, the black singlet becomes a part of our national wardrobe. Stephanie Gibson is a curator of history at Te Papa, The Museum of New Zealand in Wellington. She will be speaking on the history of the black singlet and some of its key manifestations in New Zealand culture over the last century.
Ron Palenski is the chief executive of the New Zealand Hall of Fame in Dunedin, a noted author and sports historian. He has a background in journalism and has been involved in the media coverage of many significant sporting events, such as 4 Olympic Games and several international rugby tours. Ron will be sharing his knowledge on the history of the rugby jersey and describing the journey by which it has become such an important icon of New Zealand and the sport.
Bookings required: 07 838 6606.
