What looks like it could be a pie-cart or a tiny sea-side bach (crib) in front of Waikato Museum is actually a small gallery space. You need to enter it to see the miniature art works made by some very notable New Zealand artists: Mike Heynes, Peter Trevelyan, Lynda Wilson, Tim Larkin, Andrea Du Chatenier, Lauren Winstone, Martin Poppelwell, Regan Gentry, Gregor Kregar, Joe Sheehan, Nick Browne and Ben Pearce.
Almost directly beneath this collection of art works, embedded into the Ngati Wairere earth, are the actual museum collections stores which have limited access.
By giving you access to view this fictional collection, the curators wanted you to imagine what it might be like to enter in to the subterranean collections that have been amassed in the city since the 1930s. Similarly to the art works by artists housed below the artists for Collected Fictions are telling their own stories whether they be truth, myth, legend or lie.
