Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
Lamb & Hayward Masterworks

The tumultuous force and vigorous power of Richard Strauss's tribute to the world’s greatest lover is followed by a complete shift in mood as the CSO joins pianist Nikolai Demidenko in a performance of Rachmaninov's Concerto No.2 – one of the great 20th century piano concertos, a work which somehow never loses its grip on audiences. The composer's Second Symphony reflects a mastery of the symphonic form and the ability to use it to convey very human feelings.

Tom Woods, conductor
Nikolai Demidenko, piano

Strauss Don Juan, Op. 20
Rachmaninov Concerto No. 2, Op. 18, C minor
Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2, Op. 27, E minor

Can anyone tell me what encore Demidenko played on Saturday night? I thought it might have been a Chopin Nocturne, but it wasn't. Very beautiful.
