Auckland Libraries and Auckland University Press invite you to Auckland’s Volcanic Heritage - an illustrated talk by Bruce W Hayward.

Refreshments at 5:30, talk starts at 6:00.

From Rangitoto to One Tree Hill, North Head to Mangere Lagoon, volcanoes have profoundly shaped Auckland's geology and geography, and played a key part in the lives of both Maori and Pakeha – as sites for Maori pa and twentieth-century military fortifications, as kumara gardens and parks, as sources of stone and water.

Come along to hear Bruce Hayward, the lead author of Volcanoes of Auckland: The Essential Guide (AUP, 2011), talk about the nature and the culture of our region's volcanic life.

Bruce W Hayward is an Auckland geologist and research scientist who was awarded the NZ Order of Merit for services to geological conservation. He is the author of many books including A Field Guide to Auckland, co-authored with Graeme Murdoch. Murdoch, previously Director of Heritage, Auckland Regional Council, who has researched, lectured and written on aspects of Auckland’s human history for 40 years, was also a co-author of Volcanoes of Auckland, as was Gordon Maitland, Curator, Pictorial Collections, Auckland War Memorial Museum, whose particular interest is the early appearance and the changing landscape of Auckland as documented by photographs, paintings and sketches.

Copies of the book, just out this month from AUP, will be available for sale courtesy of Unity Books.

Bookings highly recommended: phone 377 0209 or email Karen.Craig@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz
