From the promoter:

Chugg Entertainment today announces with great disappointment, that the inaugural GrassRoots Festival scheduled for two days over the Easter weekend; Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th April, will regrettably be cancelled.

Since the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, and the consequential standstill with which the entire country has come to, the very difficult decision has been made to cancel the event. We do not feel right seeking real media coverage for the festival while the country is so affected by this terrible disaster.

In its first year, promoters felt it vital to preserve the brand for future opportunities and do not wish to see the high calibre of acts playing to a crowd any smaller than they deserve, due to unfortunate timing and circumstance.

At a time when several other major tours are cancelling around New Zealand, we feel it important to try and give people space to deal with the most urgent issues at hand and recover.

Patrons are asked to return to their point of purchase to receive a full refund.

GrassRoots upholds a firm belief in environment and appreciates the power but also the futility of music in the face of true adversity. We endeavour to return in 2012 at a time when recovery and revival are in full swing and the country is back on its feet.

In the meantime, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this fateful disaster.

Well this gig would be a hell of a way to say goodbye to Summer. I would love to see Grace Jones doing her thing, and of course, Mr King. An epic weekend I'm sure. Shame I cant afford it.

even tho the thrill is gone in canterbury by the grace of jones everybody should get a ticket and come up and see the attractions appearing at the first grass roots festival check out the warratahs holding up the fence, keeping crowd back from the cairo knife fight but we are protected by ben harper and the relentless 7 mean while in the grass roots swamp of manakau sits swamp fox himself tony joe white. watch out tho there could be a serious heart attack alley from all the fabulous line up of artists. Wow it would have to be Grace Jones - one of the boys I work with is currently sporting a lookalike hairdo just as hers was back in the day - so we've been doing plenty of reminiscencing and playing her music in the office (My all time fave vinyl, yes 'VINYL' Island Life'. But suffice to say the whole line up is O for awesome.

How often do we get to see and hear artists of this quality? Not very often down here on Highway 35, the "Blues Highway".The "Old Masters" are getting thin on the ground and the "King of Them All" is holding court. I'm so envious of those that will be able to rub shoulders with such an eclectic a mix of talent. What an opportunity to learn from some of the best!! Ilove the blues in all it's forms and this array of artists will provide such diverse flavours, I drool at the thought!!

Hey eventfinder, born into a family completely influenced by music, I've grown up around blues listening to the greatest of the greats such as BB King, Billy Holiday, Muddy Waters, Etta James & Ray Charles just to name a few. They have all got me through alot of hard times, through the death of my mother, grandmother & both grandparents on my fathers side & all in the last 3 years. Blues music seriously does heal the soul...It would be a great honour to just be in the presence of the great BB King, Ben Harper and the rest of the blues nation.. Thanks for considering my entry.. :)

But I know BB & Ben have got my back,
the Grassroots festival is where I get it all back.

As a wannabe blues guitarist to see a living legend like BB King would be unforgettable. I love the fact that you can go chill out for the weekend and immerse yourself in blues mojo. Sometimes I kinda feel ripped off that I wasn't born way back with the chance to see the other legends of the blues genre when they were alive. Maybe seeing BB King and Lucille will make up for some of that.

I am sure everyone on the line up is good but I would be honest to admit that I don't know all of them. Just the idea of having B. B. King and Imogen Heap in one line up is already a testament to the breadth of the music genre (and generations!) this festival offers. Cheers to good music and to re-introducing the greats to those of us who need a music reboot!

    BEN HARPER ROCKS!
Since listening to Ben Harpers album "Diamonds on the Inside" I became a true fan of his music. Soulful sounds and beautiful lyrics, one of the greatest musicians of our time.

To see the master of blues BB King would be awesome - but I grew up with pull up to the bumper baby - so Grace would be my pick. Even followed her hairstyling fashion when I was younger.

Of course I am looking forward to seeing the like of BB King, Elvis Costello etc., they are absolute legends! But what I am most looking forward to is seeing the Kiwi artists mixing it up with the legends of blues and roots. Thomas Oliver Band have often reminded me of Ben Harper, so seeing them together will be awesome! Sola Rosa mixing it up with Elvis Costello, imagine that! Don McGlashan (one of our own musical legends) with BB King, amazing! Seeing such amazing global artists playing side by side with amazing kiwi artists is going to make for an memorable weekend.

Going for free wouldn't be too bad either (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Can't wait for the The Felice Brothers. That's gonna be awesome.

Junior Kimbrough may be my favorite blues artist though. Got onto him after the Black Keys put out Chuloma - their album of covers of his songs.
