I like living on the edge where the sea meets the land. My paintings are inspired by this South Pacific, temperate landscape, and by my own feelings towards it, with a heavy expressionist undertone. I think the New Zealand landscape demands an expressive response, and I call this Pacific Expressionism.
These paintings are a reflection of my life, the way I live & the way I see the world. Cycling, tramping and mountain climbing energise both me and my work. It is totally inspirational, from the smallest clump of moss to magnificent waterfalls pouring down rock faces & crashing into deep pools, streams meandering through the bush, cliffs pounded by surf, mountains which take enormous effort to climb but once you are on the top you can see forever.
You can see the curve of the earth, glaciers inexorably grinding on, beaches with their clean salty air, warm sand and the endless rhythm of the waves & tides, and of course all the birds & insects that make up this truly remarkable land.
I live to paint and I paint to live if you stopped me from painting I would probably die. It’s become that important to me."
