A natural off-shoot of the NZ International Film Festival, the World Cinema Showcase is the annual collaboration between the NZ Film Festival Trust and independent exhibitors in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch. Now in its 13th year, the Showcase fields a lively mix of features and documentaries to head you out of the summer blockbuster season – and into the season of festivals.
It's a potent brew this year, loaded with punchy dramas and documentaries, but not short of escapist diversions either. World Cinema Showcase is principally a programme of premieres, but we're always happy to provide a home there for repeat screenings of films that have already passed this way all too briefly in other Festivals, be it last year's Hong Kong event (Gallants) or our own mid-winter extravaganza (Waste Land, Bill Cunningham New York).
Get up close with the ‘war on terror’ in two very different but equally intimate documentaries out of Afghanistan: 'Armadillo' shows Danish soldiers in the harsh reality of war; 'Restrepo' follows American soldiers and is stunningly shot by World Press Photo winner Tim Hetherington and war journalist Sebastian Junger. Impress your friends when they ask 'Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talking About Him)?' See this frank documentary about the pop star with the unforgettable voice. And don’t miss ‘Of Gods and Men’ which David Larsen from the NZ Listener confirms is “one of the most powerful films about faith you'll ever see."
Follow the Showcase on Twitter (@wcshowcase), 'like' it on Facebook (www.facebook.com/wcs2011) and keep up-to-date on the website: www.worldcinemashowcase.co.nz.
All tickets are for evenings after 5pm, weekends and public holidays.
