Michael Houstoun returns to Wanaka with a very different sort of programme. He will be playing music that carries a strong jazz influence.
Some of the pieces are from Nikolai Kapustin who lives in Moscow. Nikolai is one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and he combines terrifying speed with perfect rhythmic control. Fortunately Nikolai also composes, using jazz idioms within classical forms.
“His music is a gift to those of us who would like to know what it feels like to play jazz without spending a lifetime studying it!”
Don’t miss hearing New Zealand’s leading pianist as he edges out from the classical tradition in which he is a master and puts his fingers to work on the hot world of jazz.
