A new ensemble featuring established New Zealand musicians will visit Rotorua in April as part of an extensive Chamber Music New Zealand tour. Elixir is an innovative, exciting ensemble featuring some of New Zealand's most versatile and well-known chamber musicians - Kate Lineham (soprano), Rachel Thomson (piano), and Moira Hurst (clarinet/saxophone).
Incorporating everything from Estonian folk songs to jazz, the programme promises a "magical journey through the classics and opera to folk music and more", says Moira Hurst. Thieving Boy has been described as some of the most beautiful music that British jazz musicians Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth ever produced. This is balanced with Schubert's famous work, Shepherd on the Rock, and Britten's Cabaret Songs, which are lively and witty settings to WH Auden's poetry. Other works include Bartandoacutek's Three Hungarian Folksongs from Csik, Vaughan Williams' Three Vocalises, and New Zealand composer Ross Carey's Sentimental Waltz, which was dedicated to Elixir member Moira Hurst.
