Dating from 1991, when the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award became an integral part of the Summer Arts events in Whakatane, the competition today draws exciting entries from all over New Zealand.
The winning work, Untitled (02-14) by Evan Woodruffe, goes on show at Rotorua Museum on 16 April 2011 along with eight other award winners. ‘Woodruffe’s complex composition is filled with movement, tension and mystery…the image remained with me long after I left it behind. For me, that’s the definition of art’ said 2011 judge Jennifer Buckley.
A love story marks the history of Wellington-born Molly Morpeth, who married Frank Canaday in Toledo, Ohio in 1932. Morpeth continued art studies in America, and by the 1960s was a confident artist who embraced expressionism. The couple retained their links with New Zealand: 300 works of art have been gifted to public collections over the decades, and a trust in her name is the principal sponsor of the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award.
