The Terrace Downs Defi

The Defi returns to Canterbury High Country in 2011 on April the 2nd. Terrace Downs High End Destination Resort will again host one of New Zealand’s most challenging yet stunning multisport events. Competitors from throughout New Zealand traveled to the resort last year to both compete and complete this unique four discipline course.

Competitors will again begin the race with a 30 kilometre mountain bike through private high country property before beginning the 37 kilometre grade two Rakaia Gorge kayak, a long boat paddler’s dream, with boils, wave trains and numerous braids to keep paddlers thinking. A 45 kilometre road cycle awaits competitors following the paddle with a couple of climbs which will definitely test the granny gear. The final run stage (15km) follows a river terrace single track allowing competitors to check out the lines they previously paddled, before entering the back of the resort for a final dash to the finish line.

An exciting addition to this year’s race will be the inclusion of a duathlon option. The duathlon will consist of the two final two stages of the multisport race which includes the road cycle and run. This option will provide those athletes keen to partake in this race, but with no previous kayak experience, the opportunity to get involved.

This race is unique in the fact that it generally does not favour any one discipline for the individuals, and with a multiple of difficult stages, some of New Zealand’s best competitors in the individual disciplines are guaranteed to once again appear in the teams events.
