The Aotearoa Māori Netball Oranga Healthy Lifestyle Trust (AMNOHL) was born out of a relationship between the Māori Women’s Welfare League, the Department of Health and the National Heart Foundation. It began many years ago as a dream. Whaea June Mariu was the first Māori women to captain a New Zealand Netball team that won the World Championships. Her vision was to reduce the rate of smoking and prevent cardiovascular disease amongst Māori women. Her passion was netball. Alongside many other foundation members she developed and drove the kaupapa that has emerged today.
For the past 22 years, regions throughout Aotearoa come together and compete annually at varying age group levels in the Māori Netball Championships. What was once a dream is now reality. Many young women and their whānau have become involved in a programme that encourages a healthy lifestyle using netball as a vehicle. It encompasses total wellbeing through tinana, hinengaro, ngakau, wairua, whānau and hiranga takaro.
Ikaroa ki te Raki (which encompasses the Manawatū, Horowheuna and surrounding regions) are proud to be hosting the 2011 Aotearoa Māori Netball Oranga Healthy Lifestyles National tournament at Vautier Park, Palmerston North, 22 - 24 April 2011. Come along and watch some top netball in action, showcasing some great talent and skills to be seen. A range of stalls will also be available throughout the tournament.
