Sarah Smith’s acrylic paintings on canvas document some of the mountains around the isthmus of Tamaki Makaurau. A number of works focus on views of Maungakiekie (also known as One Tree Hill) and the feature known as Mangere Mountain.

Often painting on site, Smith’s works show closeup detail and distance views. While paying attention to identifying physical aspects, her distinctive use of colour gives the landscapes a character of looming strength, distinguishing her work from others’.

She relates that on her return to Auckland it was the volcanic cones that seemed such a defining attribute of the region.
