Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is pleased to present a unique dual exhibition showcasing the talents of two regional artists. Goldworks! is the title of Irish born artist Kate Buckley’s first New Zealand exhibition which will feature her drawings using graphite and gold on cotton rag paper. These sumptuous works are accompanied by the finely crafted designer furniture of Andy Halewood. His exhibition features works that were created as models for his students in the Furniture Design & Making Course on the Ucol Palmerston North campus. Buckley and Halewood’s work complement and enhance one another and together should help the potential buyer to envision the drawings and furniture as perhaps paired in one’s home or office. It is an exhibition not to be missed. A reception to honour the artists will be held on Friday 11th November from 5-7PM at the gallery, 33 George Street, Palmerston North. The public is cordially invited. The dual exhibition will continue through 6th December 2011.

Andrew ‘Andy’ Halewood is a senior lecturer for Ucol’s Diploma in Furniture Design and Making, a qualification that is unique to Ucol in New Zealand. Born in Blenheim in 1967, Andy “dreamed of making furniture from the day I was introduced to working with wood at primary school. In 2005 I entered my first competition piece at the Kawerau Wood Skills Festival and won first prize in the pine section. In 2010 and again this year I received first prize in the same category. Following Kawerau 2005 I made it my goal to have students experience competition on a national scale. We have had great success and as a result Ucol has been on the podium on a regular basis.”

In 2010 for the second year in a row Andy was selected as one of only 10 New Zealand designers to take part in a ‘design and build’ competition on Waiheke Island which showcases excellence in furniture design. He had also been selected for this honour in 2008. Respected for his ability to motivate and lead his students, Andy’s broad industry experience and sound knowledge of the furniture trade enables him to help his students ‘coax their creative dreams into reality.’ Andy joined Ucol in 2001, after working for Laucombe Design furniture makers in Foxton; he maintains vital contact with the industry. “I have had the privilege of crafting furniture for a wide range of clients in New Zealand.” As an acclaimed designer-maker who appreciates the value of exhibiting student’s efforts as well as his own furniture designs at national competitions and at major regional art galleries such as Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts.
