Theatres and halls provided an interdenominational arena for young New Zealand where more citizens could be reached at the same time.
Westport was no different to other communities and theatres soon became the focal point for political speaking, for hosting important dignitaries, for sports by way of boxing tournaments, entertainment, religious crusades, dances/balls, prize-giving ceremonies, wedding receptions and other family gatherings as well as the traditional pantomimes, dramas and bawdy music hall productions.
The exhibition organised by Westport Genealogy & History Group will showcase some of these event venues and present some interesting stories and artefacts capturing how it was in the old days of golden theatre.
