The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) with special guests Alexander Shelley and Colin Currie present Soundscapes, at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington as a part of the Radio Network Tour.
Alexander Shelley - conductor
Colin Currie - percussion
The Programme will include:
• Copland - Appalachian Spring Suite
• Higdon - Percussion Concerto
• Cresswell - Landscapes of the Soul
• Beethoven - Symphony No.6 Pastoral
This is the sound of America. The resonant, wide-open-spaces sonority of Copland’s Appalachian Spring conclusively established a uniquely American voice – one as yearning as it is stirring – drawn from folk music and jazz. Appalachian Spring is a ‘pastoral’ work, celebrating the simple gifts of life in rural America.
Copland’s tradition of democratic, expressive music is audible in the Percussion Concerto of multi-award-winning composer Jennifer Higdon. Its dedicatee, Colin Currie’s performance of this work has been described as ‘extraordinary’.
Landscape is also the subject of New Zealand composer Lyell Cresswell’s musical meditation, but in this case, the landscape is imaginary – it is a journey inwards, a revealing reflection of
the artist.
Beethoven recollects his 1802 escape from the confines of Vienna to the Austrian countryside in his gentlest and most radiant symphony.
Tickets will be available from Ticketek.
