Il Maggiore - My Father’s War in Italy [Soup & A Seat]
(NZ, 2001, Exempt, 45 mins)
In this fascinating documentary Political cartoonist Malcolm Evans journeys to Italy to retrace his father's attempted escape from a World War II prison camp. Although he was exempt from conscription, Major Hilary Evans chose to enlist and fight in the war. He was subsequently captured in Italy and sent to a prisoner of war camp. He escaped the camp and evaded capture for 10 months by living rough in Italy's hills. Using his father's letters, Super 8 films and diaries as well as interviews with people in parts of Italy, Evans builds up a picture of his father, who he otherwise describes as “a remote and forbidding man”.
Soup & A Seat runs until 24 September. Come in for a homemade soup and a choice selection of films. A cup of soup and movie screening for $8 only
