I live in Auckland West – in the Waitakere Ranges surrounded by native bush looking out to Auckland City, beautiful sunrises – especially when it’s going to rain. I have lived in West Auckland all my live, growing up in Avondale and moving to Waiatarua when I was married – 40 years ago.

Whilst growing up I watched my father paint and teach art classes at home in the evenings, joining some of the classes myself as a teenager. Although it did cross my mind when I left school to attend art school this wasn’t allowed by my parents (especially my mother), I spent all my working life doing office work and art was not part of my life again until my children had all grown up and I found time to think about what I really wanted for myself. I then attended art classes for a while and this lead to my completing a Diploma in Visual Arts and later a Bachelor of Visual Arts which I completed last year. I still do accounts work as an income earner, fitting in my painting when I can.

Although I have been inspired by many things with my painting, it is the landscape and the changing seasons that inspire me most. Painting itself – I enjoy the process and finding different ways of applying paint. All my paintings that I will be exhibiting in Turangi are not painted with a brush. This is something I seem to have inherited from my father as he was always trying different ideas out, bamboo sticks and cardboard, etc. I love colour, both bold and subtle. I paint, or create art, because I need to, it’s part of who I am and I only wish I had begun sooner.

The reason I am exhibiting in Turangi is because we own a house there and have spent many years in Turangi and love it. The exhibition came about as I was mourning the fact that because I was not a permanent resident I couldn’t be part of your co-operative – this is the next best thing.

On another note entirely though not unrelated, my other main passion in life is science – quantum physics – the nature of reality – string theory – the big bang – the big questions. These topics I explore using drawing, on paper and other media. I am working towards an exhibition in this vein next year in Auckland.
