Where: Kelly Tarlton's, 23 Tamaki Drive, Orakei Show map
Restrictions: All Ages
Website:
Get out from the rock you’ve been sheltering under all winter and scuttle into Kelly Tarlton’s these school holidays for the special Living On the Edge exhibit that puts the spotlight on the ooky kooky critters living on our shoreline and lets you get hands on with them!
For two weeks only the crabs, kina, starfish and other creatures who call New Zealand’s rock pools home will take over Kelly Tarlton’s – and you’re invited to look, listen and touch to discover all their habits and habitats.
The stars of the show will be housed in two new touch pools. Kids of all ages can stroke a starfish, handle a hermit crab, prod pipis and get touchy-feely with the anemones! We’ve got curators on hand to supervise kids and show them the correct way to handle the more delicate and dangerous critters – plus they’ll be sharing secrets and stories about what makes all the crazy seashore creatures so unique.
Once kids have gotten hands on with their favourite creatures Living On the Edge, they can dry off and check out a couple of species who it pays to keep your distance from. In the Looking Only tanks there are giant hermit crabs (with equally giant pinchers) and some of the toxic sea slugs that have been washing up on Auckland beaches and causing concern lately.
All around the exhibit there’s plenty of colourful information about the rocky shore and its inhabitants – including tips for keeping kids, and the creatures they might come across, safe at the beach this summer.
Away from the pools, children who take a shine to the seashore critters they meet Living On the Edge can have a go at making their own rocky companion over at the craft table where we have all the materials and instructions kids need to make pet rocks or shell creatures. We’ll also teach them to make origami crabs and fish so they can create their own rocky shore at home.
