South Bound Switch - Motorway Closure

To open up the new southbound Newmarket Viaduct, we first have to close the existing one for up to 36 hours. This will take place from 5pm on Saturday September 4, meaning the Southern Motorway will be closed southbound between Gillies Ave and Greenlane on Saturday evening and all day Sunday.

Please be advised that this closure will have a significant impact throughout Auckland, not just the local vicinity. You can help yourself and others by leaving the car at home over this period - particularly on Sunday.

- Only travel by car around Auckland if you really have to over this weekend – and view our suggested detour routes for your best option.
- If you do have to drive, do so with extra caution and courtesy as significant delays are inevitable.
- Consider using the train to get around the greater Auckland area – visit www.maxx.co.nz for your best option.

This single weekend closure and opening of the new bridge will allow us to open the fourth southbound lane from the city to Greenlane by early 2011, reducing journey times and peak hour frustrations for regular commuters, and providing an improved driving experience for all.
