Walters Prize finalist Alex Monteith opens a major survey exhibition called Accelerated Geographies featuring mesmerising, ambitiously-scaled video installations.

Several multi-channel works, up to 15 metres in width, will absorb the gallery spaces in a whole-of-gallery encounter and will premiere Monteith’s most recent project, shot in the South Island with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during Exercise Blackbird 2010.

Also included is Red Sessions on surfing shot at Taranaki’s Stent Road, a five channel video installation shot with the RNZAF’s Red Checkers, and a mesmerising looping manoeuvre with motorcycle legend Shaun Harris. There are also two works dedicated to Waitangi Day protests including the Auckland Harbour Bridge march.

Monteith’s exhibition is only the third time in the gallery’s 40 year history that a single artist has taken over the whole gallery to exhibit.
