For the first time in over 30 years a solo exhibition of Tony Fomison's work for sale will be shown in Dunedin. The Brett McDowell Gallery exhibition will feature oil paintings, drawings, lithographs and a number of ceramics made at Barry Brickell's Driving Creek pottery.
Tony Fomison, (1939 - 1990), was initially trained as a sculptor in Christchurch but by the time of his death on Waitangi Day 1990 was regarded as one of New Zealand's foremost painters. Born in Christchurch to a white working-class family, Fomison came to spend most of his life in Auckland where he became deeply involved with the local Maori and Samoan communities, so much so that eventually he partly identified himself as Samoan - receiving the pe'a in 1979 - the traditional Samoan tattoo.
