Twelve volunteers dirtied their hands to clean up the Avon riverbank on Saturday, 18 September 2010, in spit of physical tiredness and emotional anxiety caused by the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 4 September and over 400 aftershocks in the past 2 weeks.

60kg rubbish picked up mainly contributed to cigarette butts, plastic bags and beer bottles.

The area of Avon riverbank between Bridges of Remembrance and Gloucester Street that the volunteers cleaned up is rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage and tourist attractions.

The volunteers were New Zealand-born kiwis, migrants from Spain, China, USA and UK, and international students from Japan and Spain. Their time and efforts on beautifying Christchurch were priceless.

The annual community event is organised since 2003 by 2WAYS who specialises in New Zealand Study and Tour Programmes for Spanish, Catalan and Chinese clients. It's part of the environmental campaign Clean Up The World and Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week 2010.
