One of the official inaugural concerts on the new Klais organ in Auckland Town Hall.

Includes a free pre-concert talk at 1.30pm by Indra Hughes, and the launch of a new CD of the inauguration of the organ in March 2010.

The programme includes Widor's complete Organ Symphony No 5, with its famous Toccata; Elgar's Nimrod; Bach's Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C; and music by Cocker, Wesley and Guilmant.

Indra Hughes is one of the most distinguished and respected musicians in New Zealand. He received his early training at the Cathedral in Blackburn, Lancashire; at Oxford University, where he was Organ Scholar at Oriel College; and at the Royal College of Organists in London. He is the founder and conductor of Musica Sacra, one of the finest choirs in New Zealand. In 2007 he became the first person in New Zealand to be awarded the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts, with his thesis about the unfinished ending of Bach’s masterpiece The Art of Fugue, and in the same year he was elected a Fellow of London’s Royal Society of Arts.

He has been closely involved with the project to install the new Town Hall Organ and was one of the organists at the inaugural concert in March 2010. As an organist he has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious venues including Westminster Abbey, York Minster and Melbourne Cathedral, and he has been praised for his inspiring playing and for the colourfulness and inventiveness of his his registration. This concert, not to be missed, will showcase the breathtaking new Klais organ in Auckland Town Hall in all its glory.
