Join chef and food writer Perrin Rowland as she talks about the history of dining out in New Zealand – from pies and chips to oyster bars and hotel dining – in her new book, Dining Out.
Extensively illustrated and engagingly written, Dining Out is a terrific gastronomical tour through New Zealand history. From Dunedin's Savoy to K Road's Hi Diddle Griddle, from hogget to hapuka, Dining out introduces us to the history of the New Zealand restaurant from the 1860s to the present day.
Drawing on menus, memories, photographs and newspapers, Rowland starts with the story of New Zealand's first 19th century restaurants, then goes on to cover licensing and the Depression years; World War II and the Americans; post-war dining and the six o'clock swill; the rise of ethnic restaurants; and our contemporary explosion of flavours. She demonstrates through the New Zealand restaurant experience how our peoples and cultures have changed over the last 150 years.
An experienced chef and food writer, Perrin Rowland has cooked her way around the world from her native US, through Ireland and Italy to New Zealand. She gained her MA in History from the University of Auckland with a thesis on the history of New Zealand restaurants. She has written food-related entries for Te Ara: The Encyclopaedia of New Zealand and has been a restaurant reviewer for Auckland's 95bfm.
