Taste of Sailing

Relax and unwind on a Friday and enjoy social sailing. For over ten years Richmond Yacht Club has organised a series of fun races that take place throughout the summer, called the Richmond Yacht Club’s Victoria Friday Special. It is a popular event as it allows newcomers to experience the sport (and its sociable side) in a friendly and relaxed environment.

We run this series of 8 races and each race night start at 6pm when the crew meet the skippers at their boats to enjoy an exciting yet laid-back race (no extras) around the buoys on the Waitemata Harbour. Once the boat is packed away, it’s time to head to the clubrooms where the bar is open and nourishing meals are available.

Each race you are allocated to a different boat which can range in size from a 22ft to 44ft yacht. It is also a form of networking whereby crew members are encouraged to let skippers know that they are available to crew for any of their other racing throughout the year. At the end of each race you will have the opportunity to attend seminars designed specifically for this series to teach you terminology, knots and the basics of sailing to improve your confidence.

Race 4: Friday 10 December 2010
Race 5: Friday 11 February 2011
Race 6: Friday 25 February 2011
Race 7: Friday 11 March 2011
Race 8: Friday 25 March 2011

To be eligible for this series you must have a current crew membership ($92) and pay a race entry fee and for beginners seminars of $78 for the series (Total of $170).

You can either post your forms and cheques to: Richmond Yacht Club, PO Box 46324, Auckland 1147; or you may pay by credit card by completing the details on the race entry form, and then faxing the forms to the club on 09 360 2379.

As there are limited places available, subs and race fees must be paid prior to the commencement of the first race you participate in. Acceptance will be on a first come, first served basis. To assist with planning, please register your interest as early as possible to get the best value for your money and as many races on the water as possible.
