As the voting draws to a close on the annual poll of New Zealand's favourite bird, the Wellington Debate turns to the arguably more important question, who is New Zealand's noblest?
While favoritism may be determined by a popularity contest, nobility requires rigorous debate, the presentation of reasoned arguments supported by solid evidence.
In an hour of enlivened discussion, the Wellington Debate will see six eminently qualified speakers argue the following moot:
This house moves that the Ruru/Morepork is the noblest of New Zealand birds.
The affirmative team will include Jerome Chandrahasen - official campaign manager for the Ruru, along with comic ornithologist TJ McDonald
Negating the moot will be Greens Party co-leader and kokako fancier Russel Norman plus plus improv guru and avian enthusiast Derek Flores.
All profits raised will be donated to a charity that, just like the noble ruru, is dedicated to protecting our native species and wild places.
