Acoustic Routes is presenting a very special concert in October: The legendary Australian-based singer songwriter Eric Bogle will be appearing at The Ruby Lounge in what may be his final concert tour of New Zealand.
Eric has recorded 14 albums in his long and outstanding career. He's perhaps best known for his anti-war songs, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", his tribute to the ANZACs of Gallipoli and "No Man's Land" (The Green Fields of France), but he has also written some of the funniest songs you will hear.
Eric was born in Scotland and grew up there, but emigrated to Australia in 1969, and became a professional musician in 1980.
Some of his songs have become international classics. The best known is probably "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", but some of his other songs, "No Man's Land", "Leaving Nancy", "Now I'm Easy", "If Wishes were Fishes" are now beginning to rival "Matilda" in the icon stakes. His songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, Mary Black, Donovan, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, Billy Bragg, The Pogues and The Furies, amongst others.
Eric has toured extensively during the past 25 years or so, and has appeared at major folk music festivals around the world. He has been awarded the Order of Australia medal for services to the entertainment industry, and a Peace Medal from the U.N. for his efforts, through music, to promote peace and racial harmony.
Eric Bogle will be performing with his long-time musical partner, John Munro (guitar and mandolin) during his New Zealand tour. This is his only Wellington concert.
Opening the concert will be Upper Hutt's John Sutherland, another Scottish ex-pat (from Aberdeen originally) who's highly regarded for his trad and blues-based song repertoire and beautifully executed finger-picking guitar style.
