Two cockerels stare beady-eyed at each other across the ring, wings outstretched in fury and their fiery woollen-plumage ruffled. Jacquelyn Greenbank's exquisitely handcrafted cockerels in The Cock Fight Night remain forever poised mid-fight, watched impassively from the sidelines by an equally ruffled brown owl. Their almost comical appearance belies Greenbank's skill and craftsmanship.
Christchurch based Greenbank has been using crochet in her work since the early 2000s, and knits, crochets and sews wool to make or cover objects such as barbeques, bicycles, sawhorses and regalia.
Greenbank uses every day objects and trawls the thrift shops for items she can re-craft into fun, brightly coloured artworks that cause the viewer to take a second look at what is often considered the ordinary, setting her work firmly within the pop oeuvre. Her skilled use of such traditional crafts as knitting and crochet, also draws our attention to the fact that these age-old crafts are in danger of being lost.
Whether terming Greenbank's work as object art, decoration or art, it is possible to engage on many levels with her work, and the irony and humour is ever present.
