Taupo Hat is an ultimate frisbee tournament held every year in Taupo during spring. People from all over New Zealand and the world gather to play a weekend of ultimate with a little partying on the side. This year it's a YouTube theme.
Teams are chosen randomly out of a hat (hence, 'hat tournament') with a variety of skills and experience on each team. This makes for a fun, friendly, and competitive tournament, with the final on Sunday afternoon.
If you've never seen ultimate being played, it's an athletic team sport played with a flying disc (frisbee). There are seven people on each team on the field, which is 100 metres long, including endzones like American football. Once you've got the disc you can't run with it, but pass it anywhere to a team mate, with the purpose of someone on your team catching it in the zone. If you take too long to throw, or the disc touches the ground or goes out, then the other team takes possession. Games usually take an hour.
This ad is mainly for spectators to come along and check it out. We're at Tauhara College for two full days. Turn up at any time, there is likely to be a game going, and some music playing. The final on Sunday afternoon will even have some commentary.
If you've played ultimate before at any level you are welcome to sign up at the website.
