Checker of the Year

Checker of the Year is our fantastic yearly competition to find the top checkers (checkout operators) in our stores. It’s a competition that combines a test of skill with a demonstration of superb customer service; at the same time, generating fantastic support for our frontline staff who play a huge part in keeping our customers happy and loving shopping with us.

-- Checker of the Year regionals:

Each year at the end of September/beginning October, competitions take place in seven regions of the Foodstuffs Auckland area, in which checkers in New World, Pak'n'Save and Four Square stores demonstrate their excellent customer service and checking skills. For the first time this year, Gilmours stores are also invited to participate.

Supporters from the stores are encouraged to attend the competitions to cheer on, encourage and congratulate their store’s competitors. It’s a celebratory event with a fabulous atmosphere – and supper and soft drinks are served afterward for everyone.

Each region has a winner, runner-up and top team. There are great prizes and trophies to be won.

-- Checker of the Year grand final:

The fourteen regional winners and runners-up go through to compete at the grand final, held the day of Convention Dinner and Dance in November. Between the regional and final event, a mystery shopper will go through each of the finalists' checkout in-store to evaluate their customer service "in the real world."

The scan results of each finalist are evaluated and from this combination of individual performance, the winner is found! The overall winner, runner-up, and top team are announced at Convention and even more fantastic prizes are awarded.
