Art Bytes are monthly talks by people of the art world. In October the talk is by James Rickard. James is te Tohunga Whakairo (Master Carver), and Tumu Whakarae (Head of School). His tribal affiliations are to Tainui, Ngāti Porou. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Maori carving with specific reference to Te Arawa whakairo (carving).

James was in the first intake of students at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in 1967. He is currently the Head of School at Te Wānanga Whakairo Rakau and is leading the carving process for Te Kākano.

James is a prolific carver who has represented Te Puia and New Zealand at a number of international symposia and conferences. Recently, he led teams of Te Puia carvers at the Shanghai exhibition.
