Veronika Maser is best known for her large woven wire sculptures in which she explores a variety of subtle optical effects. Her latest wire pieces pare back geometric elements to deceptively simple forms. Upon entering the world of motherhood two years ago, Maser’s work changed direction; while previous works use rectangular shapes and linear perspective to create the illusion of space, during her pregnancy Maser’s work softened and the strong lines diminished.
The familiar home environment has also inspired Maser to create items for domestic application. Exhibited alongside her monochromatic wire pieces will be a series of vibrant crochet works. In making these pieces, Maser builds row upon row of contrasting colours of wool until a completed pattern emerges. The large crochet piece is then stretched across a three dimensional cookie cutter shape to create a soft, huggable piece. “This latest work is inspired by a desire to indulge myself in the craft of crochet and home baking.” says Maser, “Homely tasks are so comforting and fitting when you are caring for a small child”.
